A piece of land    2013

The video installation A piece of land may be tagged as Land Art (an art movement based on the premise that the work of art and the natural environment are interdependent elements, and the work is constructed from ephemeral natural materials). In the three videos on display here, the artist takes up the role of a farmer and “plows” a piece of land in a field inside Kodra former army barracks using a dustbin, then waters it and, after a few days, “makes” (or offers ) a strip of green land in autumn.Human intervention on nature and earth, the artistic gesture and the concept of randomness all intertwine in this work, which seeks to bring manual labour back to art, the way many people would like contemporary art to be; at the same time, the work ironically depicts the artist in a cape as if a superhero.

The artwork was produced in the framework of the 4th Young Artists’ Workshop “Mediterranean Temperament? Regional Stereotypes and other Myths” (14-25.10.2013), of the 4th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Kalamaria and Action Field Kodra. The 4th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art (18.09.2013-31.010.2014) which is organized by the State Μuseum of Contemporary Art, is the second of a three part program which started in 2011 and is funded under the Operational Program Macedonia-Thrace 2007-2013, co-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) and Greece.www.thessalonikibiennale.gr
